Dave on the Driving Range today......

Updates

Things have been crazy around here, I have been busy with Wii's for Warriors and Dave has had lots of appointments along with PT/OT. Last Friday we drove down to Andrews AFB to see the guys at the EOD shop, thats how I got the pictures of the landmine. Then Saturday we went to a Military Order of the Purple Heart Christmas lunch. Saturday night we went out to dinner and Sunday we just laid low due to the freezing cold rain we always seem to have around here.

Dave got some great news on his halo, 2 rings may be coming off in February! And the whole thing might follow soon after!

Giving Back

Awhile back I mentioned that Dave has had tremendous sucess gaining his balance using the Nintendo Wii Fit. We have been talking about how we can do something to give back and have decided to start a charity called Wii's for Warriors. It would help the soldiers who are having issues with balance (amputees or TBI) and give them an opportunity to do Physical Therapy in their own home or hotel room. We are just in the beginning stages of planning this out, I am writing up a plan right now. We are also going to get the info off the Wii Dave uses that proves its success along with letters from Docs and therapists. We are hoping that Nintendo will be willing to give us the Wii's at cost to them and the rest would be funded thru private donations and a fund we are starting ourselves.

If anyone out there has any info on starting something like this up, please let me know!

Giving Thanks

This year Dave and I will be celebrating Thanksgiving with friends we have made at Walter Reed. Over the past 7 months these are the people I have laughed, cried, complained, cried some more with. I am so thankful for them!

The day Dave got hit I started to say to myself "Why me, Why us?" But just as I thought it, I stopped myself and vowed never to utter those words. I'm not sure if I can even explain in words why, but I just kept thinking it could have easily been way worse, or it could have happened to someone else.

Dave and I truly are blessed, in more ways than I can list out here. We have each other, we have family that has sacraficed alot to help us, and we have wonderful friends.

Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless!

My 100th Post

So this is my 100th post! We are having a quiet weekend at the MH, well except for the crazy people wandering around. There seem to be more around here lately, like the girl who jumped in the pond yesterday, throwing water on squirrels, laughing and yelling to herself....woooo! I'm not sure if its a lack of meds or maybe too many. There is always something going on around here!

Dave is using his canes to walk around the MH now, but has been having some ankle pain for the past few days. It's most likely due to the increased weight on the ankle for longer periods of time, but we are going to get it checked out next week.

Thursday we are going over to our friends new apartment for Thanksgiving. They used to live here, and just moved to Alexandria. Then we are planning to go down to the coast for Christmas around the 17th of December. We are looking forward to getting away for awhile!

Not even sure what to call this....

So over the weekend Dave and I attended 2 amazing events put on by the American Veterans Center, everything was first class! Last night was the final event, a Congressional Reception for OIF/OEF veterans. Sounds great, until the Congressmen and the entourages show up. I won't go into full detail but here are a few snippets from the mouths of our congressmen:

"Air Force? Really? Do they really get hurt?"
Ugh YES!

"Air Force? What do you do over there?"
Ping Pong

"Air Force? Oh did your plane get shot down?"
Maybe your not aware, but not everyone in the AF is a pilot????

"Wow your leg is about is ugly as your face"
No kidding, someone actually said that to us!

"Oh did you get hit by one of those IUD's?"
Yes sir, those inter uterine devices are killing too many Americans over there.

Ladies and Gentlemen-Your Congressmen! I have so much to say and don't even know where to begin. Needless to say we left early, I was pretty mad about it last night but know I am just disgusted that these people obviously have no clue!?

Dave did great in OT and PT today, he can stand up and touch the ground (thanks to the Wii) and then he played around with the football and in PT he did 4 laps around the track with his canes.

In between we had an appointment with orthopedic and got some really great news, Dave's bones are really filling in now and next month we will be able to get a plan for the halo to come off. It may only be on 6 more months compared to the year we had planned for!

Found this on Facebook

EOD PRAYER

Lord of power and might,
whose mercy is everlasting,
guard and guide those who
place their lives in the balance
to ensure the safety of those nearby.

Look with favor upon those with
the prowess and skill to disarm
explosive devices, render them safe,
and remove from others the threat of harm.

Bless those who have been set apart
by this hazardous duty, and give support to
their families and loved ones
who wait through each tense call.

Receive into eternal rest those
who have given their lives
and bring healing to those who mourn.
Grant that in the EOD Family
there may be unity of spirit
for the well being of all.
To your glory with grateful hearts
we thank you loving God.

Amen,

Rev Carl Bergstrom
Past National Chaplain, DAV

Occupational Therapy

Dave has been doing great in PT and OT, these pictures show how he can stand on his own for a few minutes and move his body around. This is difficult because his balance is off, but he is working hard. He has also been playing Wii Fit in OT to get balance back. If anyone wants to know what to get him for Christmas.......

Dave walked with crutches yesterday, unfortunately I didn't get any pictures. He did a lap around on his walker then on crutches.
